Food Packaging Maker Genpak LLC Will Move Headquarters Out of New York

22 April 2016

Genpak LLC, a manufacturer of food and beverage containers for restaurants and retailers, will move its headquarters from Glens Falls, New York, to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The company employs 2,000 people in the United States and Canada and operates 22 manufacturing plants in North America. Over the past 30 years, Genpak has been expanding its presence in Charlotte.

President Kevin Kelly said the decision to relocate the headquarters was driven by the company's push to develop new products more efficiently by locating its administrative staff closer to where its products are designed and manufactured. Genpak employs 62 people at its headquarters in Glens Falls. No products are manufactured there.

The company operates three manufacturing plants in Charlotte and its research and development operations also are located there.

"This is a hard decision, but the business has just kind of evolved," King said. "We believe proximity can play into innovation and collaboration."

New York is often criticized as an expensive and difficult place to do business because of the high taxes and labor costs and tough regulations, but King said those were not factors in the decision to move the headquarters.

Genpak executives on Wednesday informed employees in Glens Falls of the plan to move administrative offices to Charlotte early next year. Employees will be given the opportunity to relocate to North Carolina. The new headquarters in Charlotte will be operational by January, but the Glens Falls location will not close until May 2017, King said.
