August Faller presents individualised packaging solutions for small lot sizes

11 August 2016

At the leading industry exhibition for pharmaceutical chemicals, the CPhI 2016 in Barcelona, August Faller GmbH & Co. KG will be presenting products and services for individualised and personalised packaging solutions. The portfolio of the pharmaceutical specialist, a company that focuses on small production runs, ranges from the standard folding carton, special designs for clinical trials, and special labels through to packaging services for small to mid-sized amounts.

“There is a clear trend favouring customised individual solutions for medical pharmaceutical packaging, which at the same time means that the pharmaceutical companies will be more inclined toward small lot sizes and well-thought-out packaging services,” Dr. Daniel Keesman, managing partner of August Faller GmbH & Co. KG, explains in the run-up to the trade fair.

This trend is further boosted by the increasing number of medications for treating rare illnesses (orphan drugs) and “companion diagnostics” products with which tests are offered together with medications. Studies confirm this development and predict that in the future at least a third of all research projects in the pharmaceutical industry will involve aspects of individualisation.

August Faller GmbH & Co. KG is facing these challenges head-on and offers innovative packaging solutions and services for its customers worldwide. This includes the manufacture of labels of the highest quality using a digital printing process. With its camera inspection systems, Faller ensures that everything is monitored 100%. In addition to standard packaging, Faller also makes customised designs for clinical trials or designs for medications for rare illnesses such as packaging with inner partitions to protect against breakage, labels for documentation in the patient records, or wallets for tablets or capsules. As a system supplier, August Faller also offers packaging services such as packaging and manual packaging of medications for clinical studies at its PharmaServiceCenter at the Großbeeren location.

Not least of all, higher patient expectations also drive the need for individualised packaging units, shorter development times, and costeffective clinical test series. “The industry is increasingly dealing with very confident patients who are more interested in having more information on the product, the therapy, and medical support that is individually customised for them. In the future there will be demand for business models that combine pharmaceutical products with an additional service, thus providing real added value to the customer,” according to Dr. Daniel Keesman. The August Faller Group develops compliance-supporting packaging solutions, among others, that ideally meet the current communication needs of industry professionals, doctors, and patients. With smartphones, for example, personalised patient information can be played back through a video message by scanning a QR code printed on the package or over an automatic internet connection established by an NFC chip that is stuck on.

This will be Fallers’s sixth time at CPhI. Managing partner of August Faller GmbH & Co. KG, Dr. Daniel Keesman, will give a presentation on the topic of “Managing the challenging complexity of printed packaging material in the digital age” on the first day of the exhibition.
