Cosmo Films launches new BOPP film for enhanced cement bag protection

17 August 2016

Specialty films manufacturer for packaging, labels and lamination applications Cosmo Films has introduced a special biaxially oriented polypropylene films (BOPP) film to provide protection for cement bags.

The special film is a 100% polyolefin structure designed to enhance protection to the contents inside by adding moisture barrier. It is also used for laminating block bottom cement bags, which are made of woven PP material.

The enhanced moisture resistance feature of the new film helps the Indian cement industry to prevent a sizeable spoilage of total cement packed which is caused due to moisture and associated lump formation.

India, as a world’s second largest cement producer after China, has an estimated cement production capacity of approximately 300 million tons per annum. The capacity is expected to reach 407 million tons per year by FY17, Cosmo said.

Cosmo Films CEO Pankaj Poddar said: “With only 15% of the cement being packed in block bottom bags, there is a huge potential in converting these bags into laminated ones and upgrading the traditional PP stitched bags as well.

“Laminated bags have already done well in Pakistan and Bangladesh and consumption is already on the rise in Indian market.”

In addition to usage in packing cement and other building materials, the laminated bags, which feature improved heat seal and hot tack properties, could be used to pack variety of staples including rice, flour, sugar etc; pet foods; fertilizers and chemicals.

Currently in commercial use, the new environment friendly film also improves the print quality of the printed material. It can also further enhance the reusability of the bag.
