Gore unveils ImproJect plunger for sensitive biologics in pre-filled syringes
8 February 2018
Material sciences firm W.L. Gore & Associates has unveiled new ImproJect Plunger at this year’s Pharmapack event in France.
The pharmaceutical packaging and drug delivery event is being held between 7 and 8 February in Paris.
Conventional plungers for pre-filled glass syringes will work with lubricated barrels, and silicone serves as the lubricant between plunger and syringe during drug administration and creates a seal between plunger and syringe.
Gore said silicone was demonstrated to potentially interact with sensitive biologics resulting in particulation and aggregation.
The measurable migration of silicone over time is also expected to cause changes in break and glide force, which may affect injection performance and create inconvenience to patient.
Gore ImproJect helps to administer sensitive biologics into a pre-filled syringe by through eradicating silicone from the barrel and the plunger of a pre-filled syringe.
According to Gore, the ImproJect plungers, like all products in its portfolio, are tested and manufactured under the stringent quality system.
Gore PharmBIO Products drug delivery and packaging business leader John Holcombe said: "Instead of working to stabilize the silicone or replace it with another lubricant, Gore has taken the completely new approach of eliminating silicone altogether in both plunger and glass barrel.
"We look forward to introducing this technology to our colleagues at Pharmapack and speaking more about the potential benefits it holds for patients, care providers, and pharmaceutical formulation and packaging organizations."
