Green Bay Packaging breaks ground on $500m paper mill in Wisconsin, US

US-based paper and packaging producer Green Bay Packaging has broken ground on a new paper mill in the state of Wisconsin.
The company is investing $500m to construct the paper mill, which will replace its 71-year-old Green Bay paper mill.
Of the total investment, $475m will be used to build the facility, while the remaining $25m is set aside to expand the company’s shipping container division as part of the project.
Green Bay Packaging president and CEO Will Kress said: “We are proud to officially begin construction of our new, state-of-the-art paper mill in the city where our company was founded over 85 years ago.
“This new facility is the result of the continued hard work and success of our dedicated employees and loyal customers.”
The new paper mill will help protect 1,100 jobs of the company across Brown County, in addition to increasing production and product quality capabilities.
Green Bay Packaging is also collaborating with local companies to design and build the facility, as well as install its equipment.
Neenah-based Miron Construction has secured contract to build the new mill, which is expected to create 1,000 additional construction jobs.
Voith has also secured contract from Green Bay Packaging to install a new paper machine with advanced technology at the mill. It will also serve as the single full line supplier for all corresponding papermaking equipment.
The new Green Bay Mill is expected to fully commence operations in the spring of 2021, while the current mill will continue to operate at full capacity across the complete construction process.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said: “This new investment shows their continued commitment to Wisconsin and our families because it is expected to preserve more than 1,400 jobs and create 200 new ones statewide.”
Founded in 1933, Green Bay Packaging is a family-owned and vertically integrated firm that operates corrugated container plants, folding cartons, recycled and virgin linerboard mills.
The firm also manages pressure-sensitive label rollstock and specialty converting operations, as well as timberlands and sawmill facility.
With around 3,600 employees, the company has manufacturing facilities in 14 states.
