A Louisville-based manufacturer and distributor of corrugated boxes and other packing supplies is spending $6.75 million to create an operations center in Indianapolis that would employ nearly 50 people by 2016.

Premier Packaging LLC has purchased a 160,000-square-foot plant in the Park 100 business park on the city’s northwest side and is in the process of renovating and equipping it, a company spokeswoman told IBJ. Distribution operations already have begun, and manufacturing is expected to start in August.

“We chose Indiana because it complements our effort to expand manufacturing in this region. It is centrally located to the Midwest and Northeast, and Indianapolis is a hot market,” said Ben Blincoe, president of Premier Packaging, in a prepared statement. “We think Indianapolis and Louisville are the logistics capitals in the eastern part of the United States, if not the entire country.”

Hiring already has begun, and the company is looking for applicants for machine operation, maintenance, graphic and structural design, and office positions. The plant is located at 6461 Saguaro Court.

Founded in 1994, Premier operates 21 facilities and employs more than 300 associates across the nation.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has pledged up to $365,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. The credits are performance-based, meaning they cannot be claimed until workers are hired.
