Japan-based Oji Holdings has unveiled plans to install a new containerboard machine at its facility located in Malaysia.

The company will install the new machine at its subsidiary GS Paperboard & Packaging’s (GSPP) plant situated in Selangor.

Oji is investing in the new machine to enhance the production of base paper and meet the demand for products with advanced quality and low unit weight in the containerboard market in Southeast Asia.

The firm is investing around JPY35bn ($309m) to install new containerboard machine, as well as equipment for energy supply and water treatment.

The upgrading of energy supply and water treatment equipment will help the company to effectively run new containerboard machine and meet cost competitiveness.

Oji’s new containerboard machine is expected to be operational in April 2021.

Founded in 1992, GSPP is an integrated paper and packaging manufacturer in Malaysia. The company produces paper products, including corrugated medium, kraft liner, liner and white liner.

The company also produces corrugated board, which can be used to prepare carton boxes and sheet boards, as well as nestings, fittings, dividers and layer pads.

Oji, which is one of the largest pulp and paper companies in the world, operates 29 pulp and paper mills and 57 converting plants in Japan.

The company also operates six packaging plants and one paper mill in Malaysia.

In 2014, the joint venture (JV) of Oji and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) has acquired Carter Holt Harvey’s (CHH) pulp, paper and packaging business and its related companies (PPP business), for around NZ$1.037bn ($889m).

Under the deal, the JV acquired Kinleith pulp & paper mill, Tasman pulp mill, Penrose paper mill, and the CHH Group packaging businesses in Australia and New Zealand.
