Packaging firm Coveris unveils three-point reduce, recycle, sustain strategy

20 July 2018

Coveris has launched a new sustainability strategy, which looks at smarter ways of enhancing recyclability and reducing waste in line with the UK's Plastics Pact 2025 targets.

As part of the Pack Positive strategy, Coveris outlined its plans to target recyclability, packaging and food waste reduction.

To align the long-term targets with the UK’s 2025 Plastics Pact, Coveris has drafted a three-point reduce, recycle, sustain strategy to focus on supply-chain collaboration and education to promote the positive role of packaging.

The UK Plastics Pact is gathering businesses from across the entire plastics value chain with a set of targets and common vision to create a circular economy for plastics.

To support the pact, signatories have agreed to deliver four world-leading targets, including taking actions to eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign and innovation or alternative models.

The targets also include 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable and 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted, and 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

Coveris, which is a major manufacturer of recycle-ready PE films, flexible and paper packaging, is focusing on delivering the resource-efficient and sustainable solutions for the whole value-chain.

The company will focus on circular economy and reduce food waste, packaging waste, as well as environmental impacts of plastic.

The firm intends to produce more recycle-ready films and develop new materials that are easier to deal with after use. It is also planning to work with the waste reprocessing sector on recycling products.

Coveris UK president Gary Rehwinkel said: “over recent years Coveris has worked strategically with retailers and manufacturers to drive down food waste across the supply-chain and improve the functionality of packaging.

“We now need to broaden our long-term sustainable outlook to focus more on the end-of-life function of our products to support a circular-economy and ensure our recyclable products are in fact recycled.”

Coveris provides packaging solution for customers in the food, beverage, pet food, medical, and pharmaceuticals markets.
