UPM Raflatac develops new labeling material for rigid containers

Pressure sensitive label materials supplier UPM Raflatac has developed new labeling material, PP Lite, for improved sustainability.

Built with lighter face material, lower coat-weight adhesive, and a lighter backing, the PP Lite is expected to become a sustainable labeling solution for rigid containers in the home and personal care and food segments.

UPM Raflatac EMEIA business segment manager Päivi Knihti said: "Our Label Life concept looks at the lifetime impacts of different labelstock to assess their environmental performance.

“Through life cycle assessment in accordance with ISO standards, we found that moving from conventional PP to PP Lite label materials (face, adhesive, and liner) results in 16% less material use, a 15% reduction in energy and water, and a 18% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.”

Designed to meet majority of labeling needs for rigid packaging with smooth surfaces, the PP Lite labels claimed to supply chain benefits including reduction in transportation expenses.

It also allows fewer reel changes in printing and dispensing, thus saving on energy and waste with reduced waste material production, the company said.

Recently, UPM Raflatac has launched a new residue-free textile label adhesive designed for clothing and textile labeling in retail market.

The new adhesive, RP38 TXL, will ensure that labels do not discolor the fabric or leave residue when removed. It also keeps the labels securely in place for applications such as clothing and product labeling.

Employing around 2,900 people, UPM Raflatac supplies paper and film label stock for consumer product and industrial labeling.
