The world's leading glass packaging manufacturer, U.S. concern Owens Illinois opened on June 30th 2015 an extension of its glass packaging factory in Järvakandi, central Estonia, which among other things enables now to recycle sheet glass in Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The company invested nearly 25 million euros in the expansion and received 4.1 million euros from the Environmental Investment Centre as glass recycling support.

The main aim of the Järvakandi factory reconstruction was to improve the production capacity of the factory and increase environmental friendliness. The new glass melting oven that was invested in enables to use in 40% of volume recycled glass.

Only a small amount of food, alcohol and soft drinks glass containers made in the Järtvakandi factory remain in Estonia, the majority travels to the other Baltic countries and the Nordic countries, mainly Finland.

Owens Illinois has produced glass packaging in Järvakandi for nearly 20 years and provides work for 155 people there. The small town of Järvakandi has had a glass factory since 1879.
