Introduction:
Smurfit Kappa has underscored its dedication to achieving sustainability objectives through the recent launch of two cutting-edge initiatives in Spain.
Features:
At the Sangüesa paper mill, Smurfit Kappa unveiled more than 12,000 solar panels, complementing existing biomass and recovery boilers to fulfill over 50% of its annual energy needs equivalent to powering 3,600 homes.
This photovoltaic system, the largest in Navarra, is expected to slash the mill’s yearly CO2 emissions by over 3,000 tonnes, representing a €6 million investment. Since 2005, the Sangüesa mill has reduced CO2 emissions by over 51%.
Simultaneously, a €27 million investment at the Nervión paper mill will implement a fully circular production process, marking Smurfit Kappa’s most significant landfill reduction initiative to date.
These initiatives exemplify the Group’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, with investments totaling over €30 million, aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing the circularity of production processes.
