Hartford manufacturer PolyFirst Packaging plans for $5.5 million expansion

20 August 2015

Hartford manufactuer PolyFirst Packaging Inc. is planning to add jobs with a $5.5 million expansion, and is seeking city funds to help finance the project.

PolyFirst, which makes plasticfilm, bags and packaging, wants to begin building this year a 23,000-square-foot addition to its 45,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, 2261 Innovation Way, in Dodge Industrial Park, said Justin Drew, city planner.

The company also plans to develop in 2020 a separate 22,500-square-foot building that would focus on packaging for the food industry, he said.

PolyFirst has 99 employees, with plans to eventually add 40 employees through both expansions, Drew said. The first addition would cost an estimated $1.7 million to build, along with $3.8 million for new equipment.

City officials are considering a 57-acre tax incremental financing district that would include the PolyFirst site and other nearby vacant properties. PolyFirst would receive rebates of its property taxes on the new buildings for up to 20 years, with those funds totaling an estimated $900,000, Drew said.

That financing district, which needs Common Council approval, is scheduled for a Plan Commission hearing on Monday.
