rlc packaging group invests in a new PHARMACENTER in Switzerland

12 November 2015

The rlc packaging group is investing in its third PHARMACENTER near Zurich, Switzerland. This represents a further step by the family-managed enterprise to follow its strategy aimed at continuously tailoring production to the specific needs of customers and to achieve sustainable growth in target industries. In addition to the planned PHARMACENTER at the LIMMATDRUCK | ZEILER site in Switzerland, rlc operates two ultra-modern pharmaceutical packaging centers in Rüdersdorf near Berlin and in Poznan, Poland. As a system supplier, rlc covers the complete packaging value chain for the pharmaceutical industry and ensures efficient processes thanks to lean operating principles and a high level of automation.

"The demand for high quality and safe pharmaceutical packaging has been growing continuously for years," says Walter Würfel, rlc European Key Account Manager for the pharmaceutical industry. "More and more pharmaceutical companies depend on reliable system services from a single source and short production cycles." With its third PHARMACENTER opening in 2016, rlc will soon be responding to these specific needs also from Switzerland. The company is investing in the capabilities and technologies required to gradually match production operations in all three PHARMACENTERs and ensure they work together perfectly. This will make it easier to manage production peaks. LIMMATDRUCK | ZEILER is backed by many years of experience in pharmaceutical packaging production.

In addition to high-quality packaging solutions, rlc offers a wide range of services. These include the assembly and packing of folding cartons, leaflets and primarily packaged drugs in compliance with German pharmaceutical law and just-in-time distribution at the company's PHARMACENTER in Rüdersdorf. The portfolio for package inserts ranges from unfolded and pre-folded inserts to outserts. Also located in Switzerland, PAS Media completes the range of services with its GMP-validated project and artwork management tool. From the initial packaging design to final approval of proofs for printing, the company ensures smooth and secure project flow for users.

Long-term investments

As part of the expansion of its PHARMACENTER near Berlin in 2012, the rlc | packaging group invested in new production systems and doubled its machine capacity. Along with more efficient production of folding boxes, finishing solutions including UV printing and hot foil stamping are used to produce over-the-counter product packaging designed to attract attention at the POS. The company added new buildings and equipment to further develop its pharmaceutical expertise at the Poznan site in 2013. BSC Drukarnia Opakowa?, the rlc PHARMACENTER subsidiary in Poland, produces package inserts, folding boxes and labels for the pharmaceutical industry.

Focus on safety

Quick and efficient inline Braille embossing at the PHARMACENTER in Switzerland will be handled by a new Bobst EXPERTFOLD folder-gluer with ACCUBRAILLE GT. A DOTScan Braille inspection system is used to check dot accuracy and height. "We use state-of-the-art inspection systems in all of our PHARMACENTERs to meet the highest hygiene and safety standards," explains Walter Würfel. "We monitor every production step with special quality controls. After all, when it comes to pharmaceutical products, even the slightest error can have lethal consequences."
