About: Scott Summerville - CEO

Microscan has a strong history of technology innovation. We revolutionized the automatic identification (auto ID) industry in the early 1980s with the invention of the first laser diode barcode scanner, and again in 1994 with the invention of the 2D symbology, Data Matrix.

1. Can you explain more about Microscan and how is your company making an impact in the industry?

At Microscan, our mission is to leverage our expert position to help manufacturers and labs create error-free operations via innovative track, trace, control and analytics-driven solutions. Our barcode, machine vision and verification products boost manufacturing efficiency and quality control, helping our customers reduce costs, monitor quality and increase production flow.

2. How do you stay ahead or up to date with the newer technologies?

Microscan has a strong history of technology innovation. We revolutionized the automatic identification (auto ID) industry in the early 1980s with the invention of the first laser diode barcode scanner, and again in 1994 with the invention of the 2D symbology, Data Matrix. We pioneered the machine vision industry with our advanced vision and lighting products. We are experts in barcode verification. Today, Microscan continues to be a recognized technology leader through continuous new product development in the areas of machine vision, auto ID and verification.

3. Microscan has presented new product capabilities at UDI Conference? Please discuss about the capabilities?

With the UDI system mandated by the FDA, it is more important now than ever for medical device manufacturers to have the ability to reliably and consistently identify a wide range of medical devices. As part of UDI compliance regulations, organizations are implementing Direct Part Marking (DPM) and applying 2D barcodes directly to the surface of medical devices. MicroHAWK UHD barcode readers are able to decode very small and difficult-to-read barcodes, including Data Matrix two-dimensional (2D) symbols and direct part marks, with an x-dimension as small as 2 mil (0.5 mm).

Soon to be released mobile LVS-9585 hand held barcode verifier includes advanced lighting options and powerful software functionality. These new options enable users to automatically find the DPM symbol within the verifier field of view, and cycle through the lighting settings to find the lighting type that works best with the specific DPM marking and material substrate. The LVS-9585 has the ability to test both DPM parts as well as printed labels to a broad variety of global application standards, and provides comprehensive quality analysis and reporting features. The LVS-9585 is scheduled for serial production this summer.

4. What are the current trends in Packaging Industry? Which current trend has been exploited by your company?

100% print quality inspection is a main focus for us. Microscan’s suite of LVS barcode and print quality verifiers provide both in-line and off-line verification of codes (symbols and text) printed on labels and packaging. Verifiers identify errors in code readability and compliance as codes are printed, allowing manufacturers to address printing or formatting issues before incurring fines and scrapped product down the supply chain. Microscan offline verifiers enable users to test newly-designed labels for quality and compliance issues before printing, while Microscan inline verification systems are configurable into manufacturing lines and printers to check label accuracy on the fly during label application. These verification solutions address the growing need for compliance to the FDA’s Unique Device Identification (UDI) initiative, GS1 and HIBCC data structure, as well as other regulated barcoding and product serialization standards.

5. What is MicroHAWK®? Can you tell us more about this?

The MicroHAWK® platform offers the both barcode reading and advanced machine vision capability on the world's smallest smart cameras. It’s built on the highest-performance imaging engine in its class. Paired with the WebLink browser-based barcode reading interface, plus liquid lens autofocus (ID-30 and ID-40), MicroHAWK barcode readers are unrivaled in the industry for intuitive setup and use by any operator. Using MicroHAWK is as easy as plugging in power and opening a browser. MicroHAWK smart cameras (MV-20/MV-30/MV-40) are fully-integrated with optics, processor, lighting, and communications, offering an array of modular hardware options to take on any inspection task in three micro form factors. Paired with AutoVISION® simplified machine vision software (for barcode reading plus basic vision tasks like locate, count, presence/absence, OCR, and more) scalable to Visionscape® software for advanced applications, MicroHAWK is unrivaled in the industry for performance in its size, and flexibility to meet variety of application requirements and user experience levels.

6. Your company has received many recognitions (Awards). Can you share the success secret of your company?

Microscan leads an extensive legacy in the automatic identification and machine vision business. We pride ourselves in bringing ground-breaking solutions to the market since February 1982, when founder Mike Mertel integrated a laser diode into a barcode scanner, producing a smaller, faster, and safer barcode reading solution. Like said, our history also includes the invention of the industry-standard 2D symbology, Data Matrix. Today, Microscan's auto ID and machine vision business represent the convergence of multiple separate, pioneering histories, marked by continuous technology innovation that spans more than three decades. This, combined with continuous innovation and cutting-edge product development, allows us to bring truly unique solutions to the market.
