A Partnership With Sushi Specialist Eat Happy To Develop Fully Recyclable Sushi Trays For Shops And Chillers

10 August 2023

We've joined forces with sushi specialist Eat Happy to create an entirely recyclable and sustainable alternative for the company's disposable plastic sushi trays.

Crafted from natural and renewable raw materials using corrugated cardboard, the new packaging comprises both the tray and lid. These innovative packaging solutions have been meticulously designed to exhibit water and grease resistance while simultaneously safeguarding and preserving the integrity of the sushi within.

Our team has developed a diverse array of sushi trays in various shapes and sizes, including options ranging from single servings to party platters. This accomplishment has been realized through our unique Circular Design Metrics approach. The anticipated outcome of implementing these replacement trays is a substantial reduction of over 1,250 tonnes of plastic waste per annum.

Employing Circular Design Metrics, we assess and tailor a distinctive solution according to a defined set of eight criteria. These encompass factors such as recyclability, utilization of renewable materials, and optimizing the supply chain. These design metrics serve as a means to evaluate the suitability of packaging for a circular economy. They also empower designers to pinpoint areas of improvement for each individual product.

"Our solution is designed with the additional consideration that the product must remain visible through a window on the tray. This meticulous design approach is harmoniously integrated with materials conducive to the circular economy. This solution is not only advantageous for our clients, but it also adheres closely to prevailing regulations aimed at reducing single-use plastics."

Our extensive product portfolio encompasses sustainable packaging solutions suitable for direct or indirect contact with a wide spectrum of food types—be it fresh, chilled, frozen, fatty, or other. The newly introduced packaging solution synergizes seamlessly with our overarching strategic growth plan within the realm of fresh food sector packaging.

"This novel packaging approach empowers us to address the escalating demand from our retail partners and customers for packaging that is more environmentally conscious. Beyond that, it underscores our commitment to safeguarding the climate and the environment. Thus, transitioning to a sophisticated, entirely recyclable packaging solution constructed from natural and renewable materials resonates deeply with our values. The consultation process with the DS Smith team was oriented towards our precise goals, and together, we tackled the substantial challenges associated with freshly rolled sushi."
