API introduces new laminating adhesive system

17 November 2017

API, a brand enhancement specialist, has introduced a new laminating adhesive which it says will meet market demand for technically challenging laminates.

Calling it a breakthrough in the performance of its metallised polyester film laminates, the company said that it has trialled the new adhesive system using a testing program.

The new adhesive joins the company’s range used in Europe.

API says that the adhesive provides better peel strength, thereby cutting down on the risk of delamination that is otherwise experienced during subsequent manufacturing processes.

API commercial director Richard Burhouse said: “This new development is another in the long line of innovations API has brought to market.

“It’s a perfect example of how customers are becoming more demanding of the materials they use, particularly where registered film laminates are concerned and we have responded to stay ahead of the game.”

A major benefit of the new adhesive system is its ability to provide extremely high bond strengths without being overly pressure sensitive in nature.

This means that, the resulting laminate provides a broader operating window to down-stream processes like die cutting where there is a risk of the cutting action leading to delamination on the edges.

The new adhesive system is also highly water resistant. It comes with better temperature stability and is compatible with API’s registration control system which allows printing of pre-imaged laminated board in register during subsequent conversion steps.

According to Richard, the new adhesive complements API’s current range of approved systems. It also allows the technical and quality personnel of the company to work closely with customers to specify the most suitable product for the job at a time when packaging is getting more sophisticated, said Richard.
