FKuR Kunststoff, Oerlemans Plastics and BK Pac Partner to Promote Bio-Based Packaging

12 February 2016

FKuR Kunststoff, Oerlemans Plastics and BK Pac have collaborated to promote the use of bio-based plastics in sustainable foodstuffs film packaging.

The trio introduced a product line based on Green PE, manufactured by biopolymer producer Braskem.

Braskem's Green PE is a sugar cane-based polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. Use of Green PE is claimed to reduce the environmental impact caused by greenhouse gases because using renewable raw materials binds up to 2.15 tons of atmospheric CO2 for each tonne of Green PE.

As part of the partnership, FKuR will take responsibility for the distribution of Green PE, which will be used by Oerlemans Plastics to produce flexible films at its facilities in Genderen and Giessen in the Netherlands.

The printed and perforated films produced by Oerlemans Plastics will be supplied to Scandinavian distributor BK Pac, which specialises in packaging materials such as films, nets and trays for vegetables, fruit, meat and other foodstuffs.

Being a local company, BK has good knowledge about the customer requirements and can therefore feed valuable information back into the value chain which can be used for further development and innovation.

FKuR Kunststoff marketing and distribution manager Patrick Zimmermann said: "Our successful collaboration with Oerlemans Plastics and BK Pac is typical of our continuous search for ways of increasing product sustainability by using renewable resources.

"It is also a model for many further possible national and multinational cooperative projects. It clearly demonstrates the potential of such projects to conserve resources and help to maintain an environmental balance while at the same time generating economic benefits along the entire value chain by using Green PE."

Based in Germany, FKuR Kunststoff produces customized bioplastics, which do not require any further modification and can be processed directly on existing equipment as a drop-in solution.

Oerlemans Plastics produces flexible synthetic packaging and film products for the horticultural, packaging, retail and other industries.
