Harpak-ULMA Announces Availability of Revolutionary Tray-Sealer

6 September 2023

Harpak-ULMA, the leading innovator in intelligent and connected packaging solutions, is proud to unveil a groundbreaking advancement in tray sealing technology with the introduction of the Mondini Trave Sinfonia®. This cutting-edge solution revolutionizes the packaging process for snack and meal producers, offering unparalleled productivity enhancements and cost savings.

The Mondini Trave Sinfonia® empowers producers to achieve significantly higher packaging throughput within a more compact and flexible workspace, all while reducing labor requirements. This solution ushers in a new era of fully automated tray packaging processes, providing meticulous control over product loading with positional accuracy down to 10 microns, sealing, and unloading procedures. This streamlined approach is complemented by the introduction of Mondini's next-generation sealer, the largest of its kind to date, featuring a 1500mm long tooling footprint capable of delivering an impressive 33,000 pounds of sealing pressure. Seamlessly integrated with an electronically controlled magnetic track system, this configuration is a pioneering feat, enabling the Trave Sinfonia to achieve unprecedented tray throughput and efficiency within a compact form factor that minimizes manual intervention.

A groundbreaking development in tray sealing technology lies in the integration of a software-controlled magnetic track system as part of the sealer's bottom tooling. This magnetic rail supports independent trolleys, known as "nests," which serve as the bottom sealing tool, eliminating the need to remove the package from the nest for sealing. A programmable software interface enables precise control of each individual shuttle, offering pinpoint accuracy. Unlike traditional mechanical systems that rely on pusher arms, conveyors, vision systems, or sensors to index tray placement, this digital system electronically governs each tray's position, velocity, and acceleration, elevating tray sealing to an unprecedented level of precision. Furthermore, the elimination of conventional infeed and outfeed belts, along with associated components like guides, pacers, belts, and pusher arms, contributes to a streamlined, maintenance-friendly setup.

Carlo Bergonzi, Tray Seal Manager at Harpak-ULMA, emphasized the uniqueness of this system, stating, "The ability to optimize each aspect of the packaging process individually while increasing control – along with reduced machine complexity and footprint – is unique." He further explained how this innovative technology provides flexibility in automating loading operations, allowing each nest to move independently to the required loading station. For example, it enables intermittent loading at one depositor and continuous loading at another, illustrating the system's adaptability and efficiency.

The capability to fine-tune each step in the process by independently controlling the motion of each nest is the linchpin of achieving peak efficiency during tray sealing. This becomes particularly advantageous when dealing with various ingredients or materials that necessitate varying loading speeds. It mitigates the impact of bottlenecks and inefficiencies, resulting in a substantial uptick in productivity.

Mr. Bergonzi also highlighted the long-term productivity gains offered by the Trave Sinfonia, saying, "Mondini has created something truly unique; they designed a tray sealer that takes speed and precision to a whole new level." He emphasized how this innovation maximizes automation and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) by replacing mechanical processes with electronic controls, offering simplicity and flexibility. The result is the highest throughput ever seen on a tray sealer, translating into a lower total cost of ownership, particularly appealing to producers looking to fully automate multi-product snack lines. The very name of the system, "Sinfonia," evokes the harmonious coordination of various elements working seamlessly together, much like a symphony.

The Trave Sinfonia is making its debut in the United States following its unveiling at Interpack in Germany in May. "This innovative system is a game-changing solution for snack producers and others seeking increased productivity and efficiency in their tray sealing operations," Mr. Bergonzi concluded, underscoring the transformative potential of this groundbreaking technology.
