Mondi gives Coca-Cola HBC Austria's functional packaging solution a special twist

11 September 2023

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper solutions, has introduced an innovative and more sustainable banderole packaging solution. This eco-friendly alternative replaces conventional plastic shrink packaging for 1.5-liter multipacks of carbonated soft drinks produced by Coca-Cola HBC in Austria. Mondi's groundbreaking Hug IT solution securely holds six bottles together during transport, utilizing Mondi's Guinness World Records-certified Advantage SpringPack Plus, known as the world's strongest paper.

The Hug-IT band possesses exceptional tensile strength and remarkable stretchability, ensuring the six bottles remain securely grouped in an upright position throughout their journey from the factory to the retailer and finally to the consumer. This band is designed to secure 1.5-liter PET multipacks of popular brands such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, and Mezzo Mix, and will be available in retail stores across Austria. Hug-IT represents an innovative breakthrough, and Advantage SpringPack Plus is currently the only paper globally that offers such unique capabilities, proving its strength as the definitive Hug-IT solution.

Advantage SpringPack Plus is crafted from 100% kraft paper, a material sourced from renewable wood. The kraft paper is derived from responsibly managed fibers and is fully recyclable within existing paper recycling systems. Paper boasts one of the highest recycling rates among packaging materials in Europe (82% in the EU²) and offers consumers a convenient disposal option.

The development of the Hug IT solution spanned three years, from concept and planning to rigorous testing and the final product's placement on store shelves. Multiple business units within Mondi collaborated to bring this sustainable and technically advanced solution to fruition, leveraging the company's extensive expertise in paper packaging and conversion. The banderole packaging is produced using automated machinery from Krones, a prominent technology group and service provider in the beverage and liquid food industry.

Efficient and seamless installation, coupled with close collaboration between Mondi, Coca-Cola HBC, and Krones, ensured the successful development of this robust and ductile paper-based solution.

Felix Sprenger, Supply Chain Director at Coca-Cola HBC Austria, emphasized the significance of responsible resource usage and recyclable materials in their sustainability strategy. He highlighted the role this innovative solution plays in their commitment to reducing plastic usage by 200 tons annually, further contributing to a circular economy. Collaborating with Mondi and other partners has been instrumental in advancing their sustainability objectives.
