Mondi makes it a (pallet) wrap with Robopac

14 September 2023

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, has joined forces with Robopac, a renowned manufacturer of pallet-wrapping machinery, to introduce an integrated and eco-conscious paper wrapping solution for pallet storage and transport.

This collaborative effort brought together Mondi's extensive experience in packaging and paper with Robopac's profound expertise in wrapping machinery. The centerpiece of this partnership is Robopac's cutting-edge paper wrapping machine, utilizing Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap, a 100% kraft paper product renowned for its exceptional palletized goods protection owing to its robustness, puncture resistance, and tension absorption capabilities. What sets it apart is that it's crafted from responsibly sourced, renewable materials, devoid of plastic or coatings, rendering it fully recyclable within existing waste management systems across Europe.

Robopac's portfolio includes both semi-automated and fully automated machines, both compatible with Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap. This enables customers to shift away from the prevailing industry norm of plastic for pallet wrapping. An independent life cycle assessment (LCA) has underscored the environmentally superior performance of Advantage StretchWrap across various impact categories, particularly in terms of climate change. Compared to virgin plastic stretch film, it boasts a 62% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and even when compared to plastic stretch film containing 50% recycled content, it achieves a 49% reduction in GHG emissions.

The semi-automatic machine can efficiently process a 25kg reel of Advantage StretchWrap, securing up to 40 pallets with a single reel every hour. Meanwhile, the fully automated wrapping machine boasts the capability to wrap up to 750 pallets with just one reel, equivalent to up to 60 pallets every hour. This innovative solution made its debut at the 2023 Interpack fair, where attendees had the opportunity to witness successful trials on the prototype.

Filiberto Felici, Robopac Product Manager, expressed the challenge they faced in adapting the paper material to packaging operations while ensuring the utmost stability of customer products during transportation with minimal resource usage. He emphasized their unique Cube Technology, which achieves maximum load stabilization and effectively complements Mondi's Advantage StretchWrap.

To provide insights into the technical features of Advantage StretchWrap and its sustainability impact, Mondi will host a webinar on Thursday, 21 September, at 10 am CET. The webinar will feature Bartosz Babicz, Product Manager StretchWrap at Mondi, and Julia Dunker, Sustainability Manager at Mondi, offering an opportunity for interested parties to gain a deeper understanding of this innovative and eco-friendly packaging solution.
