RyPax and CelluComp Launch Industry-First All Fiber Bottle Solution at PACK EXPO 2023

12 September 2023

Two visionary leaders in the fiber packaging industry have joined forces to introduce an innovative, environmentally friendly solution: the world's first all-fiber bottle with an interior coating that is biodegradable and renewable. This collaboration combines the expertise of RyPax, a molded fiber packaging production company based in Asia, with the pioneering work of CelluComp, a Scottish company known for its proprietary micro fibrillated cellulose product, Curran®, derived from root vegetable waste.

Together, RyPax and CelluComp are pushing the boundaries of the industry by merging precision plant-based packaging manufacturing with a highly sustainable feedstock ingredient to create a groundbreaking all-fiber bottle.

The key breakthrough achieved by these two independent companies was the development of a novel pulp fiber blend using Curran®, bamboo, and bagasse. This material possesses exceptional strength and minimal porosity, enabling the application of a thin, impermeable coating to the bottle's interior. This advancement represents a significant step towards sustainable packaging by eliminating the need for plastic liners. Moreover, the all-fiber bottle design boasts a premium aesthetic finish that will appeal to luxury brands in various sectors, including beverages, beauty, and cosmetics.

Christian Kemp-Griffin, CEO of CelluComp, commented, "By integrating RyPax's and CelluComp's proven technology, materials, and production expertise to produce the industry's first all-fiber bottle at scale, we are witnessing a major evolution in the industry. Our unique capabilities and entrepreneurial approach have finally given rise to a design that packaged goods companies and consumers have been eagerly awaiting."

Alvin Lim, CEO of RyPax, added, "Combining our global expertise in fiber packaging design and production with CelluComp's innovative ingredient solution, we are achieving a significant breakthrough in barrier packaging. This initiative will contribute to the removal of millions of tons of plastic waste from the environment."

The collaboration between RyPax and CelluComp has been in the works for over three years, and it recently received validation from the Danish Technological Institute (DTI), a crucial partner in the development of viable proof-of-concept prototypes.

Alexander Bardenstein, Business Development Manager at DTI, stated, "This collaboration and design represent something the industry has been eagerly anticipating for a long time, and we are excited that a solution is now available. The RyPax/CelluComp bottle has undergone comprehensive testing to earn our endorsement and allows them to tailor this technology for the global market."

The partnership is gearing up to scale production for various industry applications, spanning beverages, beauty products, health, medicine, food, and various retail brands. This collaboration aims to assist manufacturers in offering more sustainable products, reducing waste, and aligning with sustainability goals. Looking ahead, RyPax and CelluComp plan to work closely with DTI to explore additional fiber packaging solutions, including fiber screw threads, caps, thinner coatings, and intricate branding methods on bottles.

Alvin Lim, CEO of RyPax, concluded, "Following the successful unveiling of our groundbreaking all-fiber bottle at PACK EXPO 2023, we are excited to announce our next strategic phase. We are actively seeking like-minded collaborators and prospective partners who share our vision and enthusiasm for innovation. Together, we aim to bring this remarkable all-fiber bottle into mass production, opening new avenues for brands to achieve their sustainability objectives. If your company values pioneering solutions, sustainability, and shared success, we invite you to join us on this journey towards a brighter, more sustainable future."
