Sharp acquires Berkshire Sterile Manufacturing

7 October 2023

Sharp, a renowned global leader in commercial pharmaceutical packaging and clinical trial supply services, has made a significant announcement today regarding its acquisition of Berkshire Sterile Manufacturing (BSM), a distinguished contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) specializing in fill finish services for clinical and commercial sterile injectable products, based in Massachusetts.

This strategic acquisition represents a milestone for Sharp as it expands its capabilities to provide a comprehensive small-to-medium scale sterile injectable service offering to the biopharmaceutical industry.

The synergy between Sharp's existing clinical supply, packaging, and distribution solutions and BSM's sterile manufacturing expertise will pave the way for a unified global CDMO service. This service encompasses every aspect, from sterile drug product manufacturing to clinical trial services, commercial packaging, and distribution, thereby delivering exceptional value to biopharma customers.

Founded in 2014 in Lee, Massachusetts, BSM was established with a clear mission: to produce clinical and commercial drug products on a small scale, maintaining the highest standards of sterility assurance and quality. BSM excels in fill finish services, featuring specialized isolator-based sterile filling of vials, syringes, and cartridges, coupled with lyophilization capabilities.

The dedicated team of 228 professionals at BSM will transition into the Sharp family while continuing their essential work from the Lee, Massachusetts facility.

Dr. Shawn Kinney, co-founder and CEO of BSM, will assume a crucial role in Sharp's Senior Leadership Team, driving further growth and development in sterile manufacturing services for Sharp's valued customers. He will retain his leadership in overseeing BSM's daily operations.

On another note, Dr. Andrea Wagner, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of BSM, has decided to embark on a new journey, exploring opportunities that include establishing a fund to support women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
