About the Expert: Michelle Boon - Global Head of Flexible Packaging
Michelle Boon began her career with Mainetti Malaysia in 1997 as part of the logistics team. She later advanced to the role of Commercial Manager, where she led the sales team across Southeast Asia. Following Mainetti Group?s expansion into Vietnam in 2004, Michelle relocated to Ho Chi Minh City and was appointed General Manager for Vietnam in 2008. Her leadership and expertise led to her promotion in 2012 as the Southeast Asia General Manager, overseeing both owned and licensee operations in the region. In 2019, Michelle further expanded her responsibilities by taking on the role of Global General Manager for Flexible Packaging. She holds a degree in Hospitality Management from Stamford College, Malaysia.

1. Michelle, as the Global Head of Flexible Packaging at Mainetti, how do you assess the current global plastic pollution crisis and its specific implications for the packaging industry?
The current global plastic pollution crisis is alarming, with the world producing 430 million metric tonnes of plastic annually, and projections indicating that plastic production will triple by 2050. Much of this waste consists of short-lived products like plastic cutlery or bags. This escalation in plastic production has severe environmental and economic implications. By 2050, plastic production could account for 10 to 13 percent of the global carbon budget as outlined by the Paris climate agreement, significantly impacting efforts to combat climate change.
The packaging industry is particularly implicated by this crisis, with packaging materials constituting 47 percent of global plastic waste. This makes the industry a critical focal point when addressing plastic pollution. To mitigate its impact, the packaging industry must invest in sustainable solutions that are renewably sourced and able to be properly recycled. Failure to act will exacerbate the increasingly urgent climate crisis as we approach several tipping points that are set to see through the irreversible collapse of ecosystems and environments worldwide.
2. Can you discuss the role of flexible plastic packaging in contributing to waste pollution and the challenges it poses compared to other packaging materials?
Flexible plastic packaging plays a significant role in contributing to global waste pollution, posing unique challenges compared to other packaging materials. Whilst paper packaging significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions, with estimates suggesting that a single paper bag has a carbon footprint of 5.52 kg CO2e compared to 1.58 kg CO2e for a plastic bag. However, the reality is that because paper is renewably sourced, plastic poses greater issues. This is due to its persistence in the environment, reliance on fossil fuels, and the significant challenges associated with recycling and disposal.
Indeed, while paper can biodegrade within a month, plastic can take decades or even centuries to break down. When considering that only nine percent of global plastic waste is properly recycled, this reality becomes particularly concerning as the remainder often ends up in landfills, incineration plants, or the world’s oceans. This all contributes to long-term environmental damage. For example, every year, 8 million tonnes of plastic waste becomes marine pollution; if this continues, it has been predicted that the weight of plastic in the oceans will exceed that of fish by 2050. Improving recycling rates by adopting reusable packaging is crucial for keeping materials in a closed-loop supply chain, reducing waste and environmental harm. Extending the lifespan of plastics and minimizing the use of single-use plastics can help the industry lessen its environmental impact and combat the pollution crisis.
3. How do Mainetti’s packaging innovations enhance sustainability and reduce plastic pollution, and what are its future plans for further reducing single-use plastics and incorporating recycled materials?
Mainetti’s Polyloop initiative significantly enhances sustainability and reduces plastic pollution by advancing closed-loop recycling processes. Launched in 2021, Polyloop is the world’s first global initiative enabling retailers to source clear LDPE film containing between 30 and 100 percent recycled material. This innovation allows materials to be reused multiple times within the retail supply chain, effectively reducing the need for virgin plastic production. Polyloop enables plastic packaging to be stripped of ink, labels, and contaminants, transforming it into high-quality recycled raw material. This process prevents downcycling, thereby extending the product’s lifespan and maintaining its usability within the supply chain for as long as possible. These efforts demonstrate how innovation can reduce plastic waste and support the broader sustainability goals of the packaging industry and the environmental progress in South and Southeast Asia. To build on this progress, Mainetti continues to expand the Polyloop solution to diverse regions to democratise access to the circular economy and make closed-loop recycling more commercially viable for customers.
Looking ahead, we are researching product design and exploring alternative materials to develop an expanded line of sustainable solutions to reduce the use of plastic.
4. Could you elaborate on the regulatory pressures and industry standards that influence Mainetti’s approach to sustainable packaging and labelling?
Regulatory pressures and industry standards play a significant role in shaping Mainetti’s approach to sustainable packaging and labelling. Globally, there is a concerted effort to address the growing plastic pollution crisis, as highlighted by the 2022 commitment from all 193 UN Member States to accelerate recycling initiatives. This unified push is further emphasized by the UN Environment Programme’s 2023 report, which suggests that global plastic pollution could be reduced by 80 percent by 2040 with the implementation of robust policy and market changes.
In Southeast Asia, governments have implemented policies to reduce plastic waste. For instance, Taiwan’s early restrictions on plastic bag use, introduced in 2002, have halved plastic bag consumption from 20 billion in 2002 to 9 billion in 2023. The country has also seen a significant increase in recycling rates from 12 percent in 2001 to 58 percent in 2019. Taiwan’s success story demonstrates the effectiveness of regulatory measures in promoting a circular economy.
To deliver on its commitment to accelerating the transition to a circular economy, Mainetti expanded its sustainable packaging portfolio to provide a wider range of solutions to retailers. Mainetti therefore not only complies with these regulations but also supports the broader global mission to reduce plastic pollution and promote recycling by developing innovative sustainable packaging products, such as the Silhouette Hanger range, Mainetti’s entirely plastic-free line of hangers crafted from FSC-certified recycled paper.
5. How does consumer demand and awareness about plastic pollution impact Mainetti’s product development and packaging design strategies?
Consumer demand and awareness about plastic pollution are pivotal in shaping Mainetti’s product development and packaging design strategies. A 2024 survey by PEI Strategy on sustainable consumption behaviors in Hong Kong revealed that 70 percent of consumers prefer sustainable products and 78 percent have spent more on sustainable options in the past. Additionally, over half of respondents felt that their favorite brands should enhance their efforts to provide sustainable choices. As a result, Mainetti continues to expand its range of sustainable solutions to meet increasing consumer demand. For example, M-Film™ is our line of 100% recyclable flexible packaging films designed with both the base material's composition and its end-of-life in mind, offering a clean, consistent film that can be reused in a closed-loop process. Similarly, our 100% LDPE recycled e-commerce mailing bags provide our customers with high-quality products made from sustainable materials.
6. What are the most significant challenges Mainetti faces in the transition towards more sustainable packaging solutions, and how are these challenges being addressed?
Mainetti recognizes that the industry in South and Southeast Asia faces significant challenges in transitioning to more sustainable packaging solutions. One of the primary challenges is the need for improved recycling infrastructure. Previously identified as a hotspot for plastic pollution, Southeast Asia currently lacks the recycling infrastructure needed to manage the volume of waste being imported from more developed nations. A 2023 study indicates that Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam rank among the top 10 countries globally for producing mismanaged plastics, with each generating over 1.5 million metric tonnes annually. As a result, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam have implemented various restrictions on waste imports from Western countries. In contrast, South Asia has been slower to adopt these measures. However, if this trend continues, the region could account for up to 19 percent of the total global emissions allowed under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
To address this challenge, Mainetti has taken proactive steps to improve access to a robust recycling infrastructure and mitigate the region’s mismanaged waste. In February 2024, we opened a new facility in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which scales our Polyloop recycling process, supplying Mainetti’s retailers with 35 million more Polyloop bags than the previous year. The expanded Polyloop process has already achieved up to a 45 percent reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to saving 876,000 kg CO2e. By investing in such infrastructure and technologies, Mainetti is working to make sustainable practices more accessible and practical for consumers, thereby supporting the broader transition to more sustainable packaging solutions and alleviating the burden of imported waste into the region.
7. How does Mainetti measure and track the environmental impact of its packaging products throughout their lifecycle?
Mainetti employs a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool to evaluate the environmental impact of their products throughout their entire lifespan. The LCA tool identifies key impact areas by highlighting stages in a product’s life that are particularly resource-intensive or polluting. It also assesses the effectiveness of various strategies for mitigating these impacts. This approach enables Mainetti to set meaningful targets, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain, while systematically tracking progress.
8. Could you discuss any partnerships or collaborations Mainetti has undertaken to address plastic pollution and advance sustainability in the packaging sector?
Mainetti has actively engaged in partnerships and collaborations to tackle plastic pollution and advance sustainability in the packaging sector. As a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation since 2021, Mainetti has committed to the Global Commitment initiative, which, in collaboration with UNEP, sets ambitious goals for 2025. These goals focus on eliminating unnecessary plastic and ensuring that all packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable. This commitment aligns with global efforts to replace single-use materials with renewably sourced, reusable packaging, thereby reducing the burden on landfills and oceans. Mainetti’s specific targets include converting 60 percent of their hanger production to recycled materials by 2025, achieving a minimum of 75 percent renewable energy use by the same year. Through this membership, Mainetti is collaborating with a diverse group of businesses, cities, governments, universities, and thought leaders to accelerate the adoption of circular economy practices. This collaborative approach is crucial if the packaging sector is to support the world’s environmental targets, such as those outlined in the Paris agreement which aims to limit global warming to 1.5 oC.
