With today's publication of the RAL quality mark "Climate Premium Pellets (CPP)," the official starting signal has been given for the new certification system for wood pellets. The new CPP label stands for the highest quality, verifiable sustainability standards, and resource-efficient, regional pellet production. Following successful information events with more than 400 participants from the industry in recent weeks, CPP pellets will be available on the market from the fourth quarter of 2026.
“Climate Premium Pellets sets a new standard in the market, consistently combining quality and sustainability. This creates transparency, strengthens consumer trust, and underscores the importance of wood pellets as a regional, climate-friendly, and independent energy source,” said the founding members of CPP. The new label was developed through a broad participatory process involving numerous stakeholders, including competition authorities and consumer protection agencies, and is verified through independent and transparent certification.
Combining sustainability with premium quality
In addition to higher quality requirements than those stipulated by previous norms and standards, regional production, resource efficiency, and a low CO2 footprint with clear traceability throughout the entire supply chain are mandatory for CPP pellets . "Following the political discussions and the discrediting of wood pellets in recent years, it is our aim to make the high standards of product quality and sustainable production in Germany and Austria visible and independently verifiable with a new label. We are therefore consciously focusing on collaborations and are pleased to have RAL – Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung e. V. and Sustainable Resources Verification Scheme GmbH (SURE), market leaders in quality assurance and sustainability certification with national and European recognition, as partners," said the CPP members.
