Evonik Upgrades Logistics Infrastructure for MetAMINO® with Fully Automated Flexible Packaging in Antwerp

28 October 2025

Evonik, a global chemical company, has announced a major upgrade to its logistics infrastructure at the Antwerp production site, focusing on MetAMINO® (DL-methionine) distribution. The upgrade centers on the installation of a cutting-edge, fully automated filling line designed to accommodate big bags, as well as expansion of onsite storage for these packaging units. This strategic investment was implemented during a scheduled shutdown of the plant's methionine production facilities in September and October, ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing supply chain.

This logistics enhancement is directly aimed at improving Evonik's ability to support tailor-made, flexible packaging solutions for its B2B clients in the animal nutrition segment. According to Dr. Dirk Hoehler, who heads the amino acid business at Evonik Animal Nutrition, the market for large-volume packaging—specifically big bags with 1,000-kilogram capacities—has seen a marked increase. The new facility now allows Evonik to offer packaging in both bulk and 25-kilogram bag formats in addition to big bags, substantially increasing customer choice and adapting to evolving logistical requirements in the sector.

Occupational safety and global supply security stand out as dual benefits of the upgrade. Automation not only reduces workplace accidents linked to manual weighing and filling but also ensures consistent output throughout packaging and shipment. Moreover, productivity expansion via automation equips Evonik to meet surging demand while addressing key supply chain resilience concerns, a growing focus for international partners in the volatile agri-food and chemicals market ecosystems.

Environmental responsibility has played a significant role in the company's modernization strategy. A noteworthy development is the recent switch to a more sustainable 25-kilogram methionine bag, constructed from just two paper layers instead of a previous paper-plastic composite. This transition has led to a 20% reduction in the CO2 emissions footprint per package, supporting the sustainability objectives of Evonik and its global customers. The new filling installation forms part of a broader suite of upgrades, ensuring that the Antwerp site is aligned with both environmental compliance and best-in-class B2B service standards.

On a strategic level, this investment serves Evonik's three main methionine production hubs, located in Antwerp (Belgium), Mobile (Alabama, USA), and Singapore. With an annual global capacity now exceeding 700,000 metric tons, Evonik is positioned as a key supplier to animal protein producers worldwide. Its flexible, automated packaging logistics represent a competitive advantage in responding to bespoke demands from global feed markets, reinforcing the stability and reliability of the supply chain from a B2B perspective.

This initiative demonstrates Evonik's ongoing commitment to integrating advanced automation technologies into core packaging and logistical operations, resulting in heightened efficiency, environmental performance, and customer-centric service within the industrial packaging and labelling sector for food and chemical products.
