The Refill Pod Jar was developed in response to the growing demand for refillable packaging, as both consumers and regulatory bodies increasingly prioritize sustainability. While refill systems continue to gain traction, many existing designs present challenges, including limited branding opportunities and reduced shelf appeal, as well as multi-step, less convenient user experiences.

The TriMas Packaging Refill Pod Jar addresses these challenges through a thoughtful, user-centric design that delivers functionality, convenience, premium aesthetics and sustainability.

Thoughtful design and development
The Refill Pod Jar concept reflects insights from evolving global regulations, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), as well as increasing consumer demand for environmentally responsible packaging solutions.

The design addresses key technical considerations, including achieving leak-proof and tamper-evident sealing, ensuring the refill pod is securely housed without movement and selecting materials that balance durability with recyclability.

The system features a three-part design consisting of the cap, refill pod and outer jar. The cap and refill pod, including the integrated flip-top lid, are made from polypropylene (PP), while the outer jar is designed in either PP or PET. A mono-material PP option is also being explored to further enhance recyclability and support circular design goals.
