Coca-Cola India Launches 100% Recycled PET Bottles in the Carbonated Beverage Category
5 October 2023
Coca-Cola India, the pioneer in introducing a one-liter bottle crafted from 100% recycled PET (rPET) for its Kinley packaged drinking water brand, continues its journey toward creating a circular economy. The company has now unveiled Coca-Cola® in rPET packaging, available in 250 ml and 750 ml sizes. These rPET bottles are produced by Coca-Cola's bottling partners, Moon Beverages Ltd., and SLMG Beverages Ltd.
This expansion of rPET bottles underscores Coca-Cola India's commitment to fostering sustainability and a greener future. These bottles, made entirely from food-grade rPET material (excluding caps and labels), carry an on-pack message urging consumers to "Recycle Me Again." Additionally, they prominently display "100% recycled PET bottle" on the packaging to raise awareness.
Sanjeev Agarwal, Chairman of Moon Beverages Limited (part of the MMG Group), lauded the launch of rPET bottles, emphasizing the importance of recycling PET plastic bottles to contribute to plastic circularity in India.
These rPET bottles are manufactured from food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), ensuring compliance with the stringent standards of the US FDA and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for food-grade recycled material. This recycled PET material is repurposed to create new PET bottles, reducing the demand for virgin plastic in bottle production.
Paritosh Ladhani, Managing Director of SLMG Beverages Limited, expressed pride in being one of the first bottlers to produce the rPET variant of Coca-Cola in India, emphasizing their dedication to sustainability and meaningful change.
Coca-Cola's commitment to sustainability is evident in its global effort to offer 100% rPET bottles in over 40 markets, aligning with its goal of achieving bottles with 50% recycled content by 2030 as part of its World Without Waste initiative. This initiative also includes the goal of collecting and recycling the equivalent of one bottle or can for every one sold globally by 2030, and ensuring that 100% of its packaging is recyclable by 2025.
Enrique Ackermann, Vice President of Technical and Innovation at Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, emphasized the company's dedication to driving a circular economy, reducing waste, and curbing carbon emissions. Ackermann highlighted initiatives to increase recycled content in packaging, expand the use of refillable bottles, and collect packaging for recycling as part of the World Without Waste initiative.
Notably, the Food Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved the use of recycled PET in food packaging, and the Government of India has established regulations and standards to facilitate the use of recycled plastics in food and beverage packaging.
Coca-Cola also promotes the return and recycling of PET bottles through conveniently located drop-off points and Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs). In collaboration with Zepto, Coca-Cola India launched a 'Return and Recycle' initiative earlier this year, focusing on collecting PET bottles directly from consumers with 100% traceability. Additionally, Coca-Cola introduced ASSP (Affordable Small Sparkling Pack) for the 250 ml PET bottle, reducing plastic usage in sparkling product PET bottle production by up to 40%.
In December 2022, Coca-Cola Bangladesh became the first market in Southwest Asia (SWA) to introduce Kinley water bottles in one-liter packages made from 100% rPET.
