The countdown is on for packaging innovators to submit their entries for the London Packaging Week Innovation Awards 2025, with organisers already seeing a wave of submissions and many more anticipated as the deadline approaches. With the April 25 cutoff fast approaching, brands of all sizes are urged to finalise their entries to secure their place in this prestigious competition.

Now in its second year after a standout debut in 2024, the Innovation Awards recognise the most forward-thinking, disruptive, and creative packaging solutions. This year’s competition introduces two additional categories - Sustainable Packaging and Consumer Pack - further cementing the event’s focus on sustainability and consumer-driven design. These join the existing categories of Luxury and Premium Packaging, Perfume, Cosmetics and Personal Care, Drinks Packaging, and Food Packaging, ensuring that a broad spectrum of packaging innovation is celebrated. The winners will be revealed at London Packaging Week on 15 and 16 October at the Excel Centre in London, offering finalists unparalleled industry exposure.

Last year’s winners exemplified the industry’s commitment to both creativity and sustainability, with standout entries such as Bowmore’s striking whisky decanter, a revolutionary single-sheet paper box from Altra, Highland Park’s creative flint glass decanter, and Sprite’s label-free ‘naked’ bottle. As sustainability remains at the forefront of industry priorities, 2025 is expected to push the boundaries even further.

London Packaging Week recently announced an esteemed panel of 18 judges for the awards, featuring senior experts from leading global brands, industry bodies, and sustainability pioneers. Representing companies such as Nestlé, Diageo, Marks & Spencer, Bacardi, and Pernod Ricard, as well as key voices from advocacy and regulatory organisations, the panel brings a wealth of expertise in packaging design, innovation, and sustainability. Their combined insights will ensure that this year’s awards recognise the most forward-thinking solutions shaping the future of the industry.

Alfredo Ruiz Pose, Head of Purchase at The Glenmorangie, noted two clear directions in packaging innovation. “There is a growing emphasis on sustainability, with the industry focusing on sustainable materials, reducing waste, and improving communication around these efforts. At the same time, we see packaging being designed to enhance the consumer experience, whether by offering a second use, simplifying life, or even providing health benefits. I expect these trends to continue, and in the medium term, I would love to see packaging incorporate more guidance to help consumers make sustainable choices.”

Michael Carroll, Senior Packaging Specialist at Nestlé, highlighted the importance of striking a balance between aesthetics and function. “Last year, we saw some excellent examples of premiumisation. This year, I’d love to see more sustainable, fit-for-purpose packaging with clear messaging to consumers.” Nikki Grainge, Packaging Technician at M&S, echoed this sentiment, expressing hope for “gift-worthy packaging that is recyclable, repurposable, or even reusable. Last Christmas, I received cards made from paper impregnated with seeds—I’m looking forward to seeing those wildflowers bloom in my garden. It’s like receiving a gift twice!”

Beyond celebrating innovation, the awards serve as a crucial platform for industry growth. “Packaging exhibitions play a crucial role in fostering new ideas and driving progress,” said Ruiz Pose. “The UK is exceptional at transforming concepts into reality, and London Packaging Week has the potential to showcase these innovations on a global stage.” Tanguy Pellen of Skarbek Associates added, “London Packaging Week is a key contributor to the vitality of the packaging ecosystem in the UK. The Innovation Awards act as a flagship for what the UK industry can achieve at its best, inspiring future possibilities.”

Christelle Anya, Content and Community Director at London Packaging Week encouraged businesses to take advantage of this opportunity. “Innovation is the lifeblood of the packaging industry, and this event celebrates the best, most exciting, and boundary-pushing designs. Last year’s entries set an incredible standard, and we anticipate 2025 will raise the bar even further. With free entry, brands of all sizes have the chance to gain major exposure in front of industry leaders at one of the biggest packaging events in the world.”

With dozens of entries already submitted and more expected in the coming weeks, competition is set to be fierce. The judging panel will convene on June 26th, and the winners will be announced during London Packaging Week on 15 & 16 October. More details on entry criteria and the submission process can be found on the London Packaging Week website.
