Innovative Heat Packaging Delivers Touch-free Cooking For Hot Eats On-the-move

9 September 2020

Coveris, a leading European packaging manufacturer, has developed its innovative HEAT range of packaging for hot food on-the-move. With dual ovenable and hot-hold functionality, Coveris’ HEAT range eliminates the need for direct food contact and enables instore touch-free cooking for added safety and protection. The range continues to expand to cater for a broader range of applications and further enhance its environmental performance.

Expertly crafted to deliver protection, convenience and quality, the HEAT range is designed for heat-instore applications such as pastries, wraps, toasties, and pastas. Ideal for cafes, fast food outlets, coffee shops and establishments with ‘grab and go’ fixtures, food remains in its packaging throughout the cooking and merchandising process until consumption.

Providing an alternative to plastic packaging, the FSC sustainably sourced and recyclable HEAT range is made using printable dual-ovenable cartonboard and hybrid cartonboard and film formats. Designed to withstand cooking temperatures up to 220°C and hot holding up to 90°C, the use of cartonboard delivers heat retention and product protection benefits. With the functionality to operate as a carrier through packing, distribution, cooking and serving, HEAT provides the opportunity to reduce the number of packaging components used pre and post-cooking. Further reducing the need for additional product labelling or packaging, the ability to print the HEAT range up to six colours also improves brand positioning and visual impact instore.

Improving the range’s environmental performance, an innovative new greaseproof patch can be incorporated in to HEAT packaging formats. The removable liner helps to maintain product quality and has been created to maximise board recycling and recovery by minimising contamination from food.

Another addition to the HEAT range is a window patched box, offering increased product visibility and quality assurance. Suitable for products such as pasta, design features include hand closure tabs or heat seal functionality to ensure food is secure and protected, while delivering excellent shelf presence.

Michael Conway, Food on the Move Sales Director at Coveris said: “The development of Coveris’ HEAT range meets consumer demands for a wider choice of hot eat food-to-go using responsible and sustainably sourced packaging. Cook-instore food products can often feature a three-touch cooking process: packaging removal, heat and serve. With HEAT’s dual ovenable and hot-hold properties, we eliminate the need for food handling, delivering instore touch-free cooking for added protection, safety and consumer confidence eating on-the-move.”

Direct food contact validated, the HEAT range is available in board-only and window patched designs including clamshell, nested box and wrap box formats. Using Coveris’ technical expertise, the continued development of HEAT packaging supports innovation in the food on-the-move sector and bespoke launch activity.
