Tetra Pak® visit to Lucart’s plant in Diecimo to continue collaborative working

18 October 2019

On Tuesday October 8th a delegation from Tetra Pak®,the world's leading food processing and packaging solutions company visited the Lucart plant in Diecimo to experience beverage carton recycling first hand. The delegation, made up of managers and directors from various European Countries was led by Sara De Simoni, Vice President of Equipment Engineering, Tetra Pak®. In their plant Lucart produces Fiberpack®, the paper obtained from the recycling of beverage cartons with which the company produces high quality paper products for hygiene use which are certified EU Ecolabel and FSCTM, and a material composed of polyethylene and aluminium called Al.Pe.® that Lucart uses for the production of dispensers that provide toilet paper or paper towels in public bathrooms and pallets for the transport of its goods.

The recovery of beverage cartons and the creation of these two new materials are the result of a project launched in 2010 in collaboration with Tetra Pak® which has taken the name of "Natural". Thanks to this project - which enabled Lucart to recover more than 4.4 billion beverage cartons between 2013 and 2018 - the Group fits perfectly into the concept of a circular economy  defined by the EU Commission and the new directives on the subject, and in particular the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) No. 17, aimed at  triggering a global partnership for sustainable development.

"We are very pleased with this visit by the representatives of Tetra Pak®, to whom I would like to express our heartfelt thanks" - commented Guido Pasquini, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer of Lucart. - This meeting was an important moment for us to exchange information and expertise and continue to progress the strategic partnership undertaken with Tetra Pak®, with which we share values and a common vision of the future, is fundamental in achieving one of our main objectives: the promotion of sustainable growth and a circular economy aimed at ensuring respect for the environment and the well-being of people.I am sure that from this meeting further joint initiatives will emerge in the future".

“Our work in promoting and facilitating recycling spans the entire recycling value chain, from consumer awareness, collection and sorting to recycling and then to market, which is vital because if one element isn’t working, it adversely impacts everything else” adds Sara De Simoni, Vice President of Equipment Engineering, Tetra Pak®. “Our visit to Lucart aims to build on the progress made to date, deepen our collaborative working and investigate ways to improve our recycling by design principles”

The commitment of both companies to accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular economy and to carry out high-level projects that bring concrete benefits to the environment is also demonstrated by their membership in the CE100 Network, the pre-competitive innovation programme set up by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation to drive jointly the transition from a linear to a circular economy.
