Introduction:

Tetra Pak has announced an investment of €60 million to develop a new paper-based barrier pilot plant in Sweden. The project aims to advance sustainable aseptic packaging technology while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of beverage cartons.

Features:

The innovation increases the paper content in beverage cartons to around 80%. When combined with plant-based polymers, the traceable renewable content of a carton can reach up to 92%, helping to cut the carbon footprint by as much as 43%. By simplifying the material structure from three components to two main materials—paper and polymers—the solution is also expected to support improvements in recycling infrastructure.

The facility will offer customers valuable insights into the new solution throughout the entire manufacturing process, from barrier development to packaging material production and the filling of finished packages.

The paper-based barrier pilot plant will be located in Lund. The site was chosen due to its strong links to existing research and material development, close collaboration with Lund University, and access to advanced testing facilities at the MAX IV Laboratory.
