About India Food 2025

Since gaining independence in 1947, India's food industry has made remarkable progress. Once struggling to feed its population, India has now become a global food basket. Advancements in technology, innovation, and a focus on exports have propelled India to become the second-largest country in food production, processing, and consumption. India leads the world in producing fruits and vegetables, milk, sugar, pulses, spices, oilseeds, and more. Over the past two decades, changing food consumption patterns have spurred the growth of a massive food processing industry.

Today, the Indian food retail market is valued at over $800 billion, growing at an annual rate of 11%. With the rapid expansion of the Indian economy, there has been a noticeable shift in consumption patterns from cereals to a more diverse and nutritious diet that includes fruits and vegetables, milk, fish, meat, and poultry products. These efforts have significantly enhanced the status of India's food processing industry, which now accounts for 32% of the country?s total food market. The industry contributes approximately 14% of the manufacturing GDP, 13% of India's exports, and 6% of total industrial investments.
